In 1896, the goldsmith Ferdinand Menrad founded the Württembergische Optische Industrie-Anstalt Ferdinand Menrad in Schwäbisch Gmünd.
The traditional German family business opened a new factory in Ireland in the 1970s as well as other production sites in Malta and Switzerland.
In 1983, the first license agreement with Jaguar Cars Ltd. closed in England. In the late 80s, license agreements with JOOP! and DAVIDOFF eyewear followed. In the 1980s, the Ray-Ban brand was included in the distribution program for almost a decade.
