Founded in 1956 by Wilhelm Anger in Austria, Carrera is still a leader in sports eyewear and stands for pioneering design and outstanding quality. The name comes from a Mexican car race of the 50s, the "Carrera Panamericana". Optyl is patented in 1964; an innovative plastic that weighs 20% less than acetate and other thermoplastic materials, is harder and can be adapted to the wearer's face. With the Carrera Porsche Design Collection 1979 comes a revolutionary sunglasses on the market. This cooperation with the car designer Ferdinand Alexander Porsche introduces the folding glasses and the exchangeable lenses. In 1986, Carrera presented two more exclusive product lines: the "Boeing" collection and the "Sunjet" collection. The most well-known licensed brands include Christian Dior (collaboration since 1966) and "Boss by Carrera", as a result of the contract with Hugo Boss.
